Something my wife's photography professor had the class do was keep a journal of the settings that were used for a picture. For example they would record they were using ISO 800 film, that picture 1 was taken with the f-stop, aperture light meter reading, filters used.

That way if they found something they liked they could repeat it.

Same went for working in the darkroom.

my wife reminded me of another thing her prof had the class do...

figure out what the f-stop a exposure charts say is right, then take the picture the "RIGHT WAY" then take it again with the f-stop 1 notch higher and lower and do the same with exposure.

you might be able to do this with you digital also with is set to manual.
